One of the member benefits of our Society is the liability insurance cover we enjoy through our membership of the National Allotment Society and our Policy with Chris Knott Insurance. The committee recently checked the wording of this Insurance Policy. We learned that there are important restrictions concerning ponds on allotment plots, listed below.
Action is required. Your pond must be compliant with the restrictions in the insurance policy. Please do not delay. If there is a claim, then you will not be covered and may be liable for any damages. Please keep us updated on your progress. Plots will be inspected regularly and any ponds that are not compliant will lead to sanctions under our Disciplinary Policy.
Insurers will not pay any claims resulting from injuries in any pond unless the following safety steps have been taken to ensure young children are kept away
A fence around the pond or plot where the pond is located that is no less than 1 metre high
All sections of the fence should be clear of objects that will allow a child to use them to climb over the fence
If a gate is fitted, the gate should be self-closing and open outwards from the pond with the latch/lock being fitted on the inside
